Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
