Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
