The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
